Multicultural Study of Online Reaction to the 2023 Syria-Turkey Earthquake
Project Description
The Turkey-Syria earthquake was a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck northern Turkey and western Syria on February 6, 2023. The earthquake caused significant damage to the region and sadly, over 125,000 people were injured and 2.5 million were displaced. in the 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Not only were people in the area devastated, but people worldwide were having trouble contacting friends and family living in these regions.
Social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube were flooded with posts and videos about the earthquake. Social listening can be an essential tool to understand the impact of the disaster on the affected populations and to gather information about the response efforts. Using the O.Y.E. Methodology
This analysis was extrapolated from a data set of 85,293 conversations on Twitter about the online response to the Syria-Turkey earthquake. Of these conversations, 6,515 were from verified U.S. Hispanics, and 1,415 were from verified Black Americans. All data was gathered from 01/30/2023 – 02/08/2021.
