Election Pulse: Hispanic & Black Conversation on Trump/Biden
Project Description
In a previous O.Y.E. report, we monitored the online conversation around election conversations to gather insights on what Hispanic and Black Twitter users are saying about candidates Donald Trump and Joe Biden over a one month period. As the elections draw nearer, different topics and conversations are being brought to light and discussed online. In this report, we wanted to share an update of the election discussion to see how Hispanic and Black conversations have evolved regarding these polarizing candidates.
Topics that have generated significant conversations during this most recent report include; Trump bringing up the idea of delaying the election as well as Trump questioning the accuracy and transparency of mail-in voting. Biden also announced Kamala Harris as his running mate as well as receiving an endorsement from Anita Hill, a social rights lawyer.
Methodology
The amount of engagement around this topic has increased significantly since the last report which is why this report evaluates conversations over a two week period rather than a one month period. The conversations that O.Y.E. examined all involved one of the candidates mentioned in close proximity to words that relate to voting; such as ‘vote’, ‘voting’, ‘votando’, and ‘votar’. Our team only included future and present tense of the keyword in order to focus on voter intent. This strategy allows our analysis to reduce the conversations that simply talk about the candidates but do not mention their voting intentions.
This analysis was extrapolated from a data set of 122,734 conversations on Twitter, of which 17,542 were from verified U.S. Hispanics and 12,915 were from verified Black Americans. All data was gathered from 08/24/2020 – 09/07/2020.
