Online Conversations on Body Positivity

Project Description

Body Positivity is an online movement started in order to create a space for Black women to feel comfortable in their bodies. As the movement hit mainstream media, the target audience shifted to anyone who had a body that didn’t fit the conventional mold of what the ‘preferred‘ body type is. In recent conversations, intersectional (all inclusive) Body Positivity has become the main topic surrounding this movement. Most of the online conversation surrounding Body Positivity is optimistic, however, there are some users who believe the Body Positivity movement is promoting obesity.

The O.Y.E. tool was used in order to examine Twitter conversations around intersectional Body Positivity. O.Y.E. is able to segment this data into groups based on ethnicity, age, and language spoken. Additionally, the language analysis tool can gather sentiment and keyword data to break down diverse conversations around Body Positivity.

Methodology

This analysis was extrapolated from a data set of 56,460 conversations on Twitter, of which 5,396 were from verified U.S. Hispanics and 5,485 were from verified Black Americans. All data was gathered from 01/01/2020-08/31/2020.
